The Federal Way Eagles, the defending South Puget Sound League North Division champions, got back on track with an impressive 31-7 non-league win over Emerald Ridge Saturday night at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.

The victory over the Jaguars came a week after the Eagles dropped their season-opener to Auburn, 14-7.

Federal Way (0-1 in SPSL North and 1-1 overall) got a pair of third-quarter touchdown passes from sophomore quarterback Nick Tanielu and also recovered a blocked punt in the endzone.

After playing a scoreless first quarter, the Eagles’ opened the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run by junior tailback George Williams. Federal Way made it 14-0 later in the quarter after freshman Jordan Pulu recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown.

Tanielu and the Eagles made it 28-0 in the third quarter after the sophomore hit Rian Miller with a 38-yard touchdown pass and later connected with Daytrez Sterling on a 9-yarder.

Emerald Ridge (1-1) tallied its only points of the game in the fourth quarter on a 67-yard pass. Federal Way’s Kelyn Rowe finalized the scoring with a 32-yard field goal.

The Eagles played their second game of the season without tailback/linebacker Andre Barrington, who is nursing a sprained knee. Barrington, who verbally committed to Washington State University before the season began, rushed for 1,028 yards and 18 total touchdowns and led Federal Way’s defense in tackles last year.
