For the first time since the magical year of 1976, the Federal Way High School football team finished the regular season unbeaten.
The Eagles (9-0) routed their cross-town rival, Thomas Jefferson, Friday night at Federal Way Memorial Stadium, 34-8, to keep the momentum rolling heading into the postseason.
The win avenged a 31-28 loss to the Raiders (5-4) last season, when the Eagles finished just 4-6. But this year was a complete turnaround. Federal Way used 224 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries from senior D.J. May to win the non-league contest in front of a big crowd. The Eagles had a total of 421 yards of total offense, including 350 yards rushing. Jefferson only managed 154 yards on the night.
Despite the loss, both TJ and Federal Way advance to the postseason. Federal Way hosts Snohomish (4-5) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a state-qualifying game and Jefferson travels to Eastlake at 7:30 p.m. Friday in another state-qualifying contest. The Raiders finished fourth in the SPSL North and will take on the second-seed from the KingCo League.
The unbeaten season was the Eagles’ first since reaching the state championship game in 1976. Federal Way lost to Snohomish in the title game.
Friday night, the Eagles took a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to touchdown runs by D’Londo Tucker and Rod Jones. Jefferson attempted to get back in the game with their only touchdown of the game early in the second quarter on a 2-yard run from senior quarterback K.W. Williams. The two-point conversion cut the Federal Way lead to 14-8. It was Williams’ 26th touchdown of the season.
But May took over the rest of the game. The senior scored on a 10-yard run before the half to give Federal Way a 21-8 lead into the locker room. May then scored a pair of third quarter TDs, including an 85-yarder to start the second half. He also had a 9-yarder.
Curtis 38, at Beamer 12 — The Titans fell to 1-8 with the loss to the Vikings at Federal Way Memorial Stadium Thursday night. No details were reported about the game.
Beamer will end its season Thursday night when they take on the one-win Mount Rainier Rams at 7 p.m. at Highline Stadium in Burien.
at Auburn Mountainview 29, Decatur 12 — The Lions secured its first-ever trip to the postseason Thursday with the win over the Gators (4-5) at Auburn Memorial Stadium.
The Lions began the game with a bang with Cramer Helton finding a seam and returning the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown to take a quick 7-0 lead.
Decatur’s Curtis Havili cut the lead to 7-6 with a 22-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. But Auburn Mountainview scored the next 15 points to take control.
Decatur’s second touchdown of the night came on a 34-yard pass from Abraham Ferrell-Logan to Spencer Smith.
