Federal Way senior Tia Thomas took the gold medal for her floor routine at the 4A state gymnastics meet Saturday.
Thomas scored an impressive 9.7 with her near perfect performance. Nicole Moss from Heritage came closest, scoring 9.65 for second.
Thomas said she “felt like I had it” once she completed the routine.
Coach Karrie Marton said Thomas, “worked hard for four years. She deserved it. She worked to get here.”
Mortan said gymnasts spend upwards of 30 hours a week training.
“It takes a long time and team bonding is important,” she said.
Thomas will be attending University of Oregon on a scholarship with plans to aim for medical school, while studying acrobatics and tumbling.
She is both an accomplished athlete in gymnastics and competitive cheer, and a top scholastic student.
Her floor routine Saturday at the Tacoma Dome was a seamless blend of athleticism and gymnastic technique that easily moved her to the top in the 4A division of the state.
