The postseason awards continue to pile up for recent Federal Way High School graduate Kelyn Rowe.
Rowe was recently named the Class 4A soccer Player of the Year by sports writers across Washington. Rowe was joined on the Class 4A All-State Soccer Team by Decatur graduate Josh Smith and Beamer senior-to-be Troy Peterson. Jefferson senior-to-be Chase Hanson was a second-team selection.
Rowe, who was also the South Puget Sound League Player of the Year, The News Tribune’s Player of the Year and a Parade All-American, is set to play at UCLA in the fall.
The forward led Federal Way into the state playoffs for the first time since he played as a freshman. The Eagles ended up finishing in fourth place after Rowe wasn’t able to play during the state Final Four because he flew out to Florida with his club team, Crossfire Premier, for a national-level showcase that same weekend.
Rowe was in Florida in an attempt to turn some heads of the coaching staff of the United States National Team.
Rowe scored 32 of the Eagles’ 49 goals and had an eye-popping 25 goals in Federal Way’s last 10 games. Rowe also scored nine of the Eagles’ 11 goals during their four-game postseason winning streak that ended in a state semifinal loss to Lake Stevens.
Smith was also back on the high school field for the first time since his freshman season this spring for the Gators. The midfielder played on the same Crossfire Premier team as Rowe the last two seasons.
This year, Smith finished with 12 goals and seven assists for SPSL South champion Decatur. He will play at Oregon State University in the fall.
Peterson was a playmaker for the Titans during his junior season. He was a first-team, All-SPSL South selection for the third time and finished with six goals for Beamer.
Peterson had two goals during the Titans’ 3-2 win over Evergreen in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament.
Hanson was the Raiders’ playmaking midfielder and keyed Jefferson’s run to the SPSL title. Hanson finished with only four goals and four assists, but his true effect on a game doesn’t show up on the stat sheet.
Kiyohara named All-State in softball
Recent Thomas Jefferson graduate Hannah Kiyohara was named first-team, All-State in softball. The Louisville-bound shortstop finished her impressive career at TJ with another stellar season.
Kiyohara was the co-Most Valuable Player in the SPSL North Division after hitting .432 and leading the Raiders to their third state tournament in the last four years.
Kiyohara also finished the 2010 season with 34 RBIs, 34 runs, 12 stolen bases, three home runs, four triples and 12 doubles. She also played a solid defensive shortstop.
Tanielu named honorable mention All-State in baseball
The senior-to-be had another monster season for the Federal Way baseball team and was a Class 4A All-State honorable mention. Tanielu finished second in the SPSL North in hitting with a .548 batting average.
He also led the league in runs scored with 26 in 16 games, walks with 17 and stolen bases with 12. Tanielu also had 12 RBIs, five doubles, one triple, three home runs and struck out only twice during the entire season.
Tanielu also played a solid defensive shortstop for the Eagles, who finished third at the state tournament, and was a first-team, All-SPSL North selection.
