Federal Way softball’s Payten Hurn was selected as the Federal Way Mirror Athlete of the Week.
As one of just two seniors on the Eagles’ roster, Hurn stepped up with two hits and an RBI to lead Federal Way to a 6-3 win over the Olympia Bears in its winner-to-state game on Tuesday.
Hurn has led her much younger teammates by example on and off the field, hitting .500 with 10 RBIs.
“Her leadership has meant everything for this program this year,” Federal Way coach Terry Mateus said. “It seems like there’s no challenge too big or too small for her. When the team really needs her, she always answers.”
Mateus said Hurn’s discipline has been one of the biggest attributes for the Eagles in 2017. Hurn is third on the team with just five strikeouts in 55 plate appearances.
Hurn’s efforts against Olympia helped Federal Way move on to face the Auburn Mountainview Lions on Friday in Kent.
