Federal Way American juniors win District 10 all-star tournament title

The Federal Way American Little League is the best Junior League baseball team in District 10. The group of 13- and 14-year-old all-stars took home the District 10 Junior Little League championship Saturday afternoon.

Federal Way American downed a combined team from Auburn and Chinook Little Leagues, 8-2, in the title game.

Federal Way got a complete-game pitcher performance from Mitch Stewart. Stewart allowed only four hits and didn’t walk a hitter during the victory and struck out 13. It was Stewart’s second complete-game victory of the tournament.

Federal Way American downed Chinook/Auburn in their opener, thanks to pitching of Stewart, and then beat South Hill Little League to earn a berth into the championship. Against South Hill, Andrew Maertins and Mustaffa Niazi pitched American to victory.

Maertins also led the offense throughout American’s three-game tournament run with eight hits. Stewart, Mitchell Garza and Brandon Shires combined for 27 hits and scored 22 of the team’s 24 runs during the tournament.

The team now goes to Medical Lake for the state tournament beginning July 17. Federal Way American will take on the winner of the District 6 tournament in their opener at 9 a.m. at Medical Lake High School in the Spokane area.
