The Federal Way girls basketball team is hitting its stride.

After losing their opening two South Puget Sound League North Division games to Kentwood and Auburn Riverside, the Eagles have won five straight league games and sit in third place. Kentwood, the second-ranked team in the nation, leads the North with a perfect 5-0 record and Auburn Riverside, the defending Class 3A champions, is 6-1.

Federal Way downed Jefferson Thursday, 55-43, and Tahoma Friday night, 66-42, and are 5-2 in the SPSL North and 8-3 overall.

To say the Eagles jumped all over Jefferson Thursday night would be an understatement. Federal Way outscored the Raiders 22-0 during the first quarter and hung on during the remainder of the game. The Eagles had four players score in double figures against TJ. Brittany Barrington, Tyshana Burgess, Darah Huertas-Vining and Talia Walton all tallied 11 points each.

Jefferson (4-3, 7-3) was led by the 14 points of Stacy Albrecht and Unique Taufa’asau. The loss was the Raiders’ third SPSL North loss in a row after starting the year 4-0.

The Eagles got 22 points from senior Jacqie Evenson, 12 from Walton, 11 from Burgess and 10 from Barrington in the win over Tahoma.

The Decatur Gators dropped a heart-breaker to Puyallup Saturday night, 39-36. The Vikings outscored Decatur 14-9 during the fourth quarter to overcome a two-point Gator lead.

The loss dropped Decatur to 3-3 in the SPSL South Division and 3-6 overall. The Gators were led by the 12 points of Tenea Holcomb.
