The Federal Way Eagles girls basketball team officially wrapped up the second seed from the South Puget Sound League North Division with a 73-35 win over cross-town rival Decatur on Friday night.
The win improved the Eagles to 14-4 overall and 9-3 in the North. Federal Way has two regular-season games remaining on its schedule — last night against Kentridge (after press time) and Thursday at home against Kent-Meridian. Kentwood (12-0 in the North) has already clinched the league championship.
The Eagles controlled the game against Decatur from the opening tip. Federal Way built a 24-7 lead after the first eight minutes and led 38-13 at halftime. The Eagles extended the lead to 60-21 at the end of the third quarter.
Federal Way was led by the 18 points of junior Jacqie Evenson. Freshmen Talia Walton (11 points), Brittany Barrington (9) and Chantel Dixon (9) also combined for 29 points.
Jefferson moved into a four-way tie for third place in the SPSL North with an impressive 54-40 win over Kentlake Friday night.
The Raiders won the game in the first half after outscoring Kentlake 31-11 during the first two quarters. Jefferson used a balanced scoring attack with six players chipping in more than five points. Sophomore Hannah Kiyohara led the Raiders with 11 and Stacey Albrecht and Unique Taufa’asau both scored 10.
Jefferson can clinch a berth into the SPSL Tournament with wins in its final two games. The Raiders took on Decatur last night (after press time) and host Tahoma on Thursday. The top-five teams advance to the postseason.
Boys basketball
The Todd Beamer Titans remained in the playoff hunt in the SPSL South Division despite losing to the Curtis Vikings on Friday night, 75-57.
The league-leading Vikings (13-5 overall, 11-1 in the South) rolled out to a 23-19 lead after the first quarter and extended the lead to 39-29 at halftime.
Beamer (7-11, 5-7) was led by the 15 points of Evan Cook. Andrew Winton chipped in 11 and Bradley Williams added 10 points for the Titans. Beamer could have clinched a berth into the SPSL Tournament with a win over Emerald Ridge last night (after press time). The Titans end their SPSL South regular season on Friday night at home against Puyallup.
The Jefferson boys fell to 1-11 in the SPSL North with a tough 62-60 loss to Kentlake Friday night on the road.
Alex Zerbach had a game-high 26 points as Kentlake (10-9, 5-7 North) edged Jefferson (5-13 overall).
Xavyr Moss had 22 points for the Raiders, and Spenser Sydney scored 16. But they were the only two TJ players in double figures. Jefferson led 14-8 after the first quarter.
Wrestling
The Todd Beamer Titans finished the SPSL South regular season with a 54-24 win over the Curtis Vikings Thursday night. The win improved the Titans to 5-2 in the South and gave them a third-place finish in the eight-team league. Rogers won the South Division with a perfect 7-0 record and Graham-Kapowsin finished 6-1.
Beamer picked up pins Cory Obungen at 140 pounds, Alex Crumley at 145, Conner Gleason at 171, Thomas Nadrich at 189 and David Sullivan at 215. Nadrich had the quickest pin of the night in just 1:21.
The Titans also got decision wins from Vince Harteau (125), Tyler Enos (135) and Ben Draeger (152).
Next up for the Beamer wrestlers is the postseason. The SPSL South Tournament runs Friday and Saturday at the Rogers High School. The SPSL North Tournament will be Friday and Saturday at Kent-Meridian.
