Kenna Ramey continued her impressive season Saturday with a pair of individual titles at the 2012 Class 4A West Central District Girls Swimming Championships at Curtis High School.
Ramey, a Federal Way High School junior, won district titles in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly at the 20-team meet which included schools from the South Puget Sound and Narrows Leagues. It was the second of three postseason championships for swimmers. Next up is the Class 4A State Girls Swimming and Diving Meet Nov. 9-10 at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
At the West Central District meet, Ramey dominated the 50 free, winning the shortest race of the day by nearly half a second. Ramey swam a time of 23.98 to outdistance second-place finisher, Emerald Ridge’s Alana Pries (24.58). Ramey’s state-winning time a season ago was 23.62.
Ramey also dominated the butterfly Saturday at Curtis, winning the race by almost two seconds in a time of 57.03. Kentlake’s Emily Tanasse finished second in a time of 58.83.
But Ramey wasn’t the only Federal Way school district athlete to bring home a district title last weekend. Jefferson senior Shelby Church won the 1-meter diving championship with a score of 348.90. Church is a veteran of the state meet, having finished sixth a season ago on the diving board. Rogers’ Emi Smith was right behind with 344.70 points.
Federal Way sophomore Tia Thomas was third overall with 336.45 points and Church’s twin sister, Monica, was eighth overall with a score of 297.65.
Mount Rainier ran away with the team title during the West Central District Meet. The Rams totaled 361 points, well ahead of second-place Kentlake (240). Federal Way ended up in sixth-place overall with 142 points.
The Federal Way 200 freestyle relay team of Eva Barth, Colby Blake, Marissa Meyer and Ramey also qualified for the state meet with a third-place finish Saturday at districts. The Eagles swam a qualifying time of 1:43.07, finishing behind Kentlake (1:41.61) and Mount Rainier (1:42.43).
