Decatur High School senior forward Kevin Day will play soccer in the fall at the University of Washington. Day was one of nine highly-touted players who signed national letters of intent with the Huskies last month.

“We are excited to add these nine talented prospects to our team next fall,” UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. “This recruiting class reflects our commitment to secure as many of the top in-state players as possible while also seeking key impact players from beyond our borders.”

Day, a 5-10 forward/midfielder, is a three-time All-South Puget Sound League selection, also earning all-state honors as the league’s second-leading scorer as a sophomore.

“Kevin will add some much needed depth to our attack next season,” Wurzberger said. “One of his current strengths is work rate and movement off the ball. With some work on his finishing skills and combination play, we believe Kevin can develop into a quality collegiate player.”

He has played for FC United, Washington Premier FC and USSF Washington Premier Academy, as well as serving as a starting forward for the Washington state Olympic Development Program (ODP) team from 2005-07.

The other Huskies that will enroll in school and join the men’s soccer program this fall are defender Matthew Berry (Snohomish), defender Niki Chow (Los Gatos, Calif.), goalkeeper Brooks Hopp (Seattle), defender Ty Klein (Seattle), midfielder Casey McCool (Bend, Ore.), forward Brent Richards (Camas, Wash.), defender Kohl Schoening (Woodinville) and midfielder Dylan Tucker-Gangnes (Bainbridge Island).

Federal Way’s Campbell headed to Santa Clara

Federal Way High School senior midfielder Murphy Campbell is one of eight players to sign a national letter of intent to play soccer at Santa Clara University.

“With a big group of players graduating, we needed to sign a big class,” said head coach Cameron Rast. “We are very excited about this incoming group. They fill needs for us in a lot of different areas and they should fit right into the Santa Clara community.

Campbell, who helped lead Federal Way to a state runner-up finish in 2007, is not playing this season for the Eagles to concentrate on his club team, Crossfire Premier out of Tukwila.

Campbell was named all-league as a freshman, sophomore and junior at Federal Way, while serving as the team captain for the past three seasons.
