For the first time since 2006 and the first time ever as a Class 3A school, the Decatur girls soccer team will play in the state tournament.
The Gators downed the Wilson Rams Saturday, 2-0, in a loser-out, West Central/Southwest District game at Highline Stadium.
The victory over Wilson earned the Gators the unenviable task of busing over the Cascade Mountains Tuesday to take on Mount Spokane at Joe Albi Stadium in the opening round of the 16-team Class 3A State Girls Soccer Tournament.
Mount Spokane (10-6-0) earned the Greater Spokane League’s lone berth into the Class 3A tournament after beating Hanford and Southridge during the postseason. Mount Spokane has won three-straight matches after losing five of six earlier in the year.
The winner of the Decatur-Mount Spokane match will take on the winner of Hanford and Southridge on Friday or Saturday in the state quarterfinals.
The Gators (11-5-1) earned the state appearance with the impressive win over Wilson Saturday. After playing a scoreless first half, Decatur got on the board thanks to a Hannah Herbert goal in the 50th minute on a pass from Abby McFaul. The two also hooked up in the 69th minute and Kayla Lipston picked up the shutout in goal for Decatur.
The Gators are the lone Federal Way school district soccer team still playing. Both the Todd Beamer Titans and Thomas Jefferson Raiders dropped loser-out district matches Saturday.
The Titans were beaten in the dreaded penalty-kick shootout by the Puyallup Vikings at Art Crate Stadium in Spanaway and the Raiders were blasted by Tahoma, 4-0, also at Art Crate.
The Beamer loss was most surprising of the two Saturday. The Titans (10-2-6) easily won the SPSL South title without a loss, while Puyallup finished up in fourth place with an 8-3-5 league record.
Saturday, the two teams played to a scoreless 0-0 tie at the end of regulation and also went scoreless during a pair of 10-minute overtime sessions, necessitating the shootout ending.
During the shootout, Puyallup outscored the Titans, 4-2, to advance into the 16-team Class 4A State Tournament. The Vikings will host Lake Stevens Wednesday.
Beamer is done for the season despite giving up only five goals during the entire season. The Titans just didn’t have enough offense to counteract their stellar defense, led by goalkeeper Megan Graf. The Titans scored one or less goals in nine of their matches.
Jefferson just couldn’t contain Tahoma Saturday. The Bears entered the match as the SPSL champs after being Beamer last Wednesday, 1-0, while the Raiders were the 10th seed from the league.
The second-ranked Bears (17-1-0) picked up two first-half goals from Cassidy Richmond and Tori Tappero and added two more in the second half to blow away Jefferson.
The loss ends the Raiders season with a 6-9-3 record.
