Decatur boys stay unbeaten, Beamer loses in OT and Eagles rack up 100 points

The Decatur Gators boys basketball team just keeps winning.

The Gators moved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the South Puget Sound League South Division with a 65-41 blowout win over the Graham-Kapowsin Eagles Tuesday night on the road.

The game against winless Graham-Kapowsin was never in question. The No. 2-ranked Gators rolled out to a 24-5 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Decatur was led by the 20 points of sophomore Jerron Smith and junior Jordan McCloud chipped in 11. Decatur’s leading scorer, senior guard Marcus Tibbs, tallied just eight points. Tibbs came into the game averaging 16.4 points.

First-place will be on the line Saturday night when the Gators play a huge game on the road against the unbeaten Puyallup Vikings. Decatur sits atop the SPSL South Division with a perfect 5-0 record, but the Vikings are right behind at 4-0.

Puyallup is currently 7-1 overall on the season. Their only loss came last week against Palm Springs High School at the Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic in Ketchikan, Alaska.

The Vikings are led by the 6-foot-9 Killian Larson, along with Jay Balmer and Alex Reiten. Larson is averaging 17.7 points a game and 15.4 rebounds and shooting 55 percent from the field. Balmer is the Vikings’ 3-point specialist and shooting 50 percent from the behind the line, while averaging 14 points a game and Reiten is chipping in 10.4 points a game.

Puyallup barely kept its unbeaten record in the SPSL South in tact Tuesday night with an overtime win over Beamer (3-2 in South, 4-5 overall) in Federal Way, 81-73. The Vikings outscored the Titans 14-6 during the overtime period after overcoming a four-point deficit to start the fourth quarter.

Beamer led 48-44 entering the final eight minutes of play, but couldn’t overcome the 24 points of Puyallup’s Jay Balmer.

The Titans’ Kevin Davis led four Beamer players in double figures with 20 points. Vlad Aficiuc chipped in 18, sophomore Napa Mefi finished with 13 and Chase Hildebrandt tallied 11 points for the Titans.

The No. 3-ranked Federal Way Eagles put up 100 points during a blowout win over the Kentlake Falcons Tuesday night, 100-59. The Eagles got 21 points each from senior guard Michael Hale and Jeff Forbes and 20 points from junior Cole Dickerson. In total, Federal Way got at least two points from nine players.

The Eagles (4-1 in SPSL North, 7-1 overall) outscored Kentlake 52-28 in the first half and tallied 29 points in the fourth quarter.

Jefferson (3-3, 4-4) allowed 32 points in the fourth quarter during a 72-62 loss to Auburn Riverside Tuesday. The two teams were tied after three quarters, 40-40.

The Raiders were led by the 26 points of senior Cramer Doughty and got 15 points from Xavyr Moss and 12 from Nate Walin.
