Behind every championship team is a coach who also deserves praise.
Each week during the high school football season, the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington State Football Coaches Association award two high school football coaches as the Coach of the Week.
Darren McKay, Todd Beamer football head coach, was selected as the Coach of the Week after Beamer’s 27-23 win against Enumclaw on Oct. 12.
Recipients receive a $500 donation to the school’s football program, as well as a framed certificate autographed by Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll. The winning coach and a guest are also invited to attend a Seahawks game.
Prior to the Titan’s disruption, Enumclaw was leading an undefeated season while ranked fifth in the state. With the victory, Todd Beamer (4-1 season, 6-2 overall) became champions of the North Puget Sound League Mountain Division.
“We’re really fortunate to have him on our staff,” said Tim Kuykendall, the athletic director at Todd Beamer High School.
Kuykendall commended McKay’s balance of passion and compassion when it comes to academics and athletics.
McKay teaches forensic science and is in his seventh season coaching Beamer football.
