Former Federal Way resident Apolo Ohno was named the male star of the year at the 76th Seattle Sports Star of the Year event at Benaroya Hall in Seattle on Jan. 26.
Other major winners on the night were San Francisco pitcher Tim Lincecum, Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez and Seattle Pacific distance runner Jessica Pixler. With more than 1,000 athletes, coaches and fans in attendance, Lincecum won the Professional Star of the Year and Pixler was female star of the year. Hernandez, the Seattle Mariners’ ace, was the winner of the sports story of the year.
Ohno became the most decorated Winter Olympian in United States history with his eighth medal at the Vancouver Games in February. Federal Way speedskater J.R. Celski was also nominated for the male star of the year.
Special guests included Keith Jackson, Gary Payton, Ohno, Gov. Chris Gregoire and Hope Solo.
Special awards went to Dave Niehaus (Keith Jackson Award), Seattle Storm president Karen Bryant (Sports Executive of the Year), Seattle Seahawks and Sounders FC owner Paul Allen (Sports Citizen of the Year), former University of Washington football coach Don James (Royal Brougham Legends Award) and Snohomish High football player Ike Ditzenberger (Seattle Children’s Inspirational Youth Award).
