BOYS SWIMMING: Relays and Wanot help Beamer win SPSL championship for second year in a row

For the second year in a row, the Todd Beamer boys swim team is the best in the South Puget Sound League.

The Titans used their big-time depth to snare the league championship Saturday by sneaking past Kentridge at the Rogers High School aquatic center in Puyallup. Beamer won all three relay races contested Saturday, which earned the Titans much-needed team points.

Beamer also got a pair of first-place swims from Bart Wanot in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. The Titan senior won a state championship last year in the 100 backstroke and finished second in the 50 free.

The relay wins, coupled with Wanot’s two victories, helped Beamer pull away from second-place Kentridge. The Titans finished with 235 points, followed by Kentridge (223) and Mount Rainier (199). Federal Way finished in 12th place with 29.5 points and Jefferson was 14th with 18 points.

Wanot’s two wins came in two of the best races of the day. The Beamer senior swam two automatic state-qualifying times. Wanot out-touched Kentridge’s Cameron Whiting and Curtis’ Brian Woodbury in the 100 free. Wanot touched in 48.99, followed by Whiting (49.09) and Woodbury (49.99). He also beat Woodbury in the 200 free by less than a second. Wanot finished in 1:49.09, compared to Woodbury’s 1:49.83.

But it was the relays that proved to be the difference for the Titans. Just like last season, Beamer took home first-place medals in the 200 medley relay (Dylan Chase, Jade Feigert, Wanot and Blake Jordan in 1:41.36), the 200 free relay (Matt Um, Cole Um, Costner McKenzie, Feigert in 1:32.24) and the 400 free relay (Jordan, Chase, Wanot, Um in 3:20.00).

The swimmers will now compete at the West Central District III Swimming and Diving Championships. The swimming portion of the meet will be held Feb. 4-5 at Rogers High School and the diving portion of the event will take place Thursday at Foss High School.

The top-seven times and scores in the finals will advance to the Class 4A State Boys Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 18-19 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
