The Federal Way boys soccer team needed some late heroics to advance into the Class 4A State Tournament and they came from senior Odasson Pelogi.
The Eagles (16-2-0) snatched a 3-2 win over the Gig Harbor Tides Saturday afternoon at Art Crate Field in Graham in a winner-to-state, loser-out West Central/Southwest District playoff game. Pelogi’s second goal came with just 16.7 seconds remaining in the second overtime session.
Federal Way now moves on to the 16-team state tournament as the No. 4 seed from the district. The Eagles will take on Snohomish at 8 p.m. at Snohomish High School on Wednesday in the opening round.
Saturday in the district game, Gig Harbor, the fourth-place team from the Narrows League, took a 1-0 lead over the South Puget Sound League South Division champions on a goal by senior forward Bjorn Brynestad with just 2.8 seconds left in the first half.
That was how it stayed until Pelogi tallied his first goal of the game three minutes after halftime. Gig Harbor answered back to take the lead back, 2-1, on a Tanner Stepp free kick in the 53rd minute.
But Federal Way’s Joseph Griffin scored the game-tying goal in the 58th minute, which is how it stayed through the 80 minutes of regulation and the two overtime sessions before Pelogi’s game winner.
Jefferson advances to state tournament
