BOYS BASKETBALL: Federal Way, Decatur looking for fifth-straight trips to state

The Federal Way Eagles boys basketball team is hoping to make a run to its fifth-straight Class 4A State Championships.

The Eagles (13-8) took the first step Saturday with a 76-67 win over the Kent-Meridian Royals Saturday at the South Puget Sound League Tournament at Auburn High School in a battle between the fourth-place teams in the North and South divisions. The win gives Federal Way the league’s seventh seed into the 16-team West Central District Tournament.

The Eagles got a huge scoring game from senior guard Deshea Bell. The 6-foot-2 Kennedy transfer finished with a season-high 34 points to help Federal Way overcome a one-point halftime deficit. Federal Way scored 47 second-half points and also got 19 from senior Jerry Duckworth.

The Eagles will now travel to Bellarmine Prep Wednesday night to take on the Lions at 7 p.m. in the opening round of the double-elimination West Central District Tournament. Bellarmine finished second in the Narrows League.

Decatur 85, Hazen 82 — The Gators earned a first-round bye at the Class 3A West Central/Southwest District Tournament with a three-point win over the Hazen Highlanders Saturday. Hazen won the Seamount League title.

The Gators (15-6) will take on the winner of a game between Mountain View and Wilson at 8 p.m. at Bonney Lake High School on Friday. Mountain View finished fourth in the Southwest District and Wilson was second in the Narrows League.

The top-five finishers at the 12-team district tournament advance to state and the Gators can clinch their fifth-straight appearance with a win over either Mountain View or Wilson. A loss would mean Decatur would have to three-straight games to get back to state.
