BOYS BASKETBALL: Decatur wins first-ever SPSL 3A game; Federal Way drops first home game in two years

In their first-ever regular season South Puget Sound League 3A Division game, the Decatur Gators won in dominating fashion over the Peninsula Seahawks, 76-25, Tuesday night.

The Gators (6-4 overall, 1-0 SPSL 3A) outscored the Seahawks, 51-19, during the first half and started the third quarter on a 17-1 run to take a 68-20 lead into the fourth.

Decatur got a career-high 27 points from junior guard Dom Hunter and senior guard Jerron Smith finished with 21, which was eight points below his season average.

The win over Peninsula also snapped a two-game losing streak by the Gators. Jefferson and Rogers beat Decatur on back-to-back days last week at the Bill Riley Communities Holiday Classic.

In other boys basketball action:

Federal Way — The Eagles fell to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the SPSL South with a pair of losses Tuesday and Wednesday. The Rogers Rams downed Federal Way, 67-52, and Bethel beat the Eagles, 60-54, Wednesday.

The loss to Bethel was Federal Way’s first loss on its home court in almost two seasons. Kentwood beat the Eagles 52-50 on Jan. 17, 2009. Federal Way went on to win the Class 4A state title later that year.

Against Bethel, the Eagles trailed by two points entering the fourth quarter, but were outscored 14-10 by the Braves down the stretch. Senior guard Jerry Duckworth led the way with 24 points for Federal Way.

Duckworth finished with 25 points against Rogers, but he was the only player to tally more than six points. Rogers was coming off a 34-point win over Decatur.

The Rams (7-2, 5-1) jumped out to a 19-13 lead after the first quarter and led 32-26 at halftime. Rogers was led by the 24 points of Derek Jobe and got 14 from Kyler Shula. Federal Way got six points each from Napa Mefi and DeeShawn Tucker.

Spanaway Lake 61, at Beamer 52 — The Sentinels took a quick 11-point lead after the first quarter and cruised to the SPSL South victory Tuesday night in Federal Way.

The Titans (3-5 overall, 2-3 SPSL South) got 21 points from Terrance Salazar, 15 from Thomas Rhodes and 14 from Mac Gridley. But the threesome didn’t get any help, combining to score 50 of the team’s 52 points.

Beamer will take on Federal Way Friday night.

at Tahoma 66, Jefferson 62 — The Raiders are now the lone winless team in the SPSL North after losing in overtime to the Bears Tuesday in Maple Valley.

The Raiders (3-7, 0-6) outscored Tahoma, 16-12, during the fourth quarter to tie the game in regulation and force overtime. But the Bears (4-5, 1-5) came out on top during the four-minute extra period.

Deontae Davis led three Raiders in double figures during the game with 19 points. Daryon James finished with 14 and Alex Merced chipped in 11. Tahoma was led by the 24 points of Christian Behrens.
