The Federal Way Eagles proved they are the best boys basketball team in Washington by winning the Class 4A state championship and rolling through the early season this year unbeaten.
The goal this year is to prove they are one of the best teams on the West Coast and maybe even the country.
Federal Way made quite a statement last weekend in Portland.
The unbeaten and top-ranked Eagles (7-0) won a pair of games over a pair of highly-regarded California teams Friday and Saturday at the 3rd Annual West Coast Christmas Championships at Concordia College.
Federal Way squeaked by the Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits Friday night, 57-56, and beat Castlemont from Oakland Saturday, 69-46. The tournament also included the two-time defending Oregon state champion Jefferson Democrats, who the Eagles will be playing at the University of Washington Jan. 18 at the King Holiday Hoopfest. Jefferson lost by 10 to Long Beach Poly Saturday night, 62-52, and beat Castlemont Friday, 73-50.
Senior Cole Dickerson was the story Friday against Long Beach Poly. The 6-foot-6 forward torched the Jackrabbits for 25 points, which included a steal and basket late in the game that gave the Eagles a commanding five-point lead.
Long Beach Poly (8-2) came into the tournament as the fifth-ranked team in Southern California by the Los Angeles Times and feature three of the nation’s top players in their respective classes in senior Shelton Boykin, 6-6 freshman Roschon Prince and 6-8 junior Ryan Anderson. Boykin, 6-5, has already signed to play next season at Long Beach State.
The Jackrabbits led by 10 points after the third quarter, but the Eagles used a 12-0 run early in the fourth to get back into the game and Dickerson, who is headed to the University of San Francisco next year, proved too much down the stretch.
Senior guard Isiah Umipig, who will play his college basketball at Cal State Fullerton, chipped in 11 points and Robert Christopher finished with 10 for the Eagles.
Things were a little easier Saturday night against Castlemont, who were ranked as the fourth-best team in Northern California entering the tournament.
Dickerson and Umipig again proved too much for the Knights. The twosome combined to score 46 of the Eagles’ 69 points. Dickerson finished with 25 and Umipig added 21 for Federal Way. Senior Tyrell Lewis chipped in 10 points.
The Eagles jumped out to a 14-12 lead after the first quarter, before outscoring Castlemont 22-8 during the second period to take a commanding 36-20 lead at the half.
The top-ranked Eagles won’t play their next game until Jan. 5, when they get back into their SPSL North Division schedule against Kentlake.
In other boys basketball action:
• The Todd Beamer Titans moved to 4-1 in the South Puget Sound League South Division with a 68-58 victory over the Rogers Rams on the road Friday night.
The Rams rolled out to a quick 21-17 lead after the first quarter, but it was all Beamer after that. The Titans outscored Rogers 20-13 in the second quarter to take a 37-34 lead at halftime.
Beamer was led by the 22 points of guard Napa Mefi and 20 from Terrelle Loggins. Kevin Davis also chipped in 14 for the Titans.
In non-league action Saturday, the Titans got by the Auburn Riverside Ravens at Beamer, 64-51. The win leaves the Titans 5-3 overall entering the Christmas break.
Beamer got 20 points each from Davis and Mefi while dominating the first and third quarters. The Titans outscored Auburn Riverside 42-27 during the two periods to take control of the game.
• The Decatur Gators remained one game back of the unbeaten Curtis Vikings in the SPSL South Division with a hard-fought win over the Bethel Braves Friday night in Graham, 59-52.
The Gators (6-1 overall, 5-1 in SPSL South) got a huge 26-point night from junior Jerron Smith and senior Jordan McCloud chipped in 12 points. Decatur led 18-7 after the first quarter, but Bethel fought back in the second quarter, outscoring the Gators 20-13 to cut the Decatur lead to just four at halftime.
The Gators will host the four-team Gator Holiday Classic over the Christmas break at Decatur. The tournament will be played Dec. 29-30. Games will take place at 6 and 8 p.m. both nights.
