The Decatur boys basketball team remained atop the South Puget Sound League North Division with an impressive 67-55 win on the road against the Tahoma Bears Friday night.

The seventh-ranked Gators (11-2 overall, 6-1 in North) jumped all over the Bears (9-5, 2-5) in the first quarter. Decatur rolled out to an 18-5 lead after the first eight minutes and cruised the rest of the way. The Gators also outscored Tahoma, 19-6, in the third quarter to take a 54-30 lead into the fourth.

Decatur was led by 23 points from senior guard Marcus Tibbs and 20 points and 10 rebounds from senior post Darious Walker. Freshman Jerron Smith chipped in 15 points.

Federal Way, the state’s third-ranked team, withstood a second-half comeback by the Thomas Jefferson Raiders to get a 54-50 win Friday night. The Raiders (5-8, 1-6) outscored the Eagles, 33-26, in the second half to make the game close in the end.

Federal Way (9-2, 5-2) was led by the 16 points of sophomore post Cole Dickerson and got 14 points from Jeff Forbes and 11 from senior Aaron Broussard. Jefferson was led by the 14 points of Xavyr Moss.

The Eagles took on league-leading Kentwood last night (after press time) and host Tahoma on Friday night before traveling to Hec Edmondson Pavilion Monday for a 7:30 p.m. meeting with the Garfield Bulldogs at the King Holiday Hoopfest.

Dakin Wanquist had 34 points and hit 12-of-12 free throws, to lead Beamer (5-9, 3-5 South) over Spanaway Lake (9-5, 4-4) Friday night.

Andrew Winton had a huge fourth quarter for the Titans, scoring all eight of his points and making a 3-pointer with 44 seconds left for a 68-66 lead. Beamer finished 8-for-8 from the free-throw line the rest of the way.

William Granberry scored 23 to pace Spanaway Lake, which has lost five of six since an 8-0 start.

Girls basketball

The Federal Way Eagles remained in second place in the SPSL North with a 65-49 win over the Thomas Jefferson Raiders Thursday night.

The Eagles (11-3 overall, 6-2 North) outscored Jefferson by 16 points in the final three quarters after playing to a 13-13 tie after the opening quarter. Federal Way was led by the 19 points of freshman Talia Walton and 18 from junior Jacqie Evenson. Freshman Chantel Dixon chipped in 13.

Jefferson (9-6, 3-5) was led by the 14 points of sophomore Hannah Kiyohara and 11 from Valerie Voellger.

The Todd Beamer Titans jumped all over Spanaway Lake in the first quarter, outscoring the Sentinels, 18-5, Friday night. But the Titans couldn’t hold on and eventually lost, 49-47.

The Titans (4-10, 2-6) were led by 18 points from Missy Canfield and 17 from Mikki Akins.

Beamer bounced back Saturday and picked up a 50-30 win over Decatur (1-12, 0-8) in a non-league game. Akins led the Titans with 16 points and the Gators were led by a career-high 11 from Ashleigh Vincent.

Wrestling

The Decatur Gators moved to 3-1 in the SPSL North with a 42-32 win over Kentlake Thursday night. The Gators sit one match behind Kentwood (4-0) and Tahoma (4-0).

Decatur got all its points on pins. The Gators recorded seven of them, including a pair of 37-second pins from 171-pounder Tristan Jones and 285-pounder Tevyn Tillman.

Jones and Tillman continued their hot wrestling on Saturday when they won individual titles at the Everett Classic Tournament. Jones beat Oak Harbor’s Chris Reilly in the final match of the 14-team tournament, 10-2. Tillman outpointed Everett’s Jake Anstett in the 285-pound final, 4-2.

Decatur finished up in sixth place as a team with 121.5 points. Vashon Island won the team title with 159.5.

The Gators also got second-place finishes from Greg Bull at 135 and Spencer Kabelac at 145.

Beamer moved to 3-1 in the SPSL South with an impressive 58-6 win over Puyallup Thursday night. The Titans won 13 of the 14 matches contested, including six pins. Beamer’s Cory Obungen had the fastest pin (1:28) of the night at 140 pounds.

Swimming

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders cruised to a 125-50 win over Kent-Meridian Thursday. The Raiders got a pair of individual wins from Jordan Gaspay in the 500-yard freestyle (5:40.20) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.29) and Jayson Gaspay in the 100 butterfly (1:04.80) and 100 backstroke (1:11.86).
