Todd Beamer High School freshman Ares Carpio continued his impressive season on the wrestling mat Saturday with another tournament title.
Carpio dominated the 112-pound bracket at the Ray Westberg Invitational in Ellensburg. Carpio beat East Valley’s Konner Hopkins in the tournament championship match, 16-5. In total, Carpio was not really tested during the 16-team tournament. Carpio racked up two pins and an 18-7 win over Eisenhower’s Ricky Sanchez in the quarterfinals.
The Ray Westberg title comes on the heels of tournament wins at the prestigious Pacific Coast Wrestling Championships in Vancouver and the Rogers Holiday Tournament in Puyallup earlier this month.
Carpio’s individual victory at the Ray Westberg Invitational wasn’t the only title for a Federal Way school district wrestler at the tournament. Beamer senior Tyler Enos won the 135-pound division and Jefferson’s Zeke Nistrian took home the 152-pound championship. Beamer finished fifth as a team and Jefferson ended up 11th. Riverside easily won the team title.
Enos pinned his first two opponents Saturday before beating Othello’s Rueben Lopez in the semifinals, 5-0. Enos then won a 10-2 decision over Selah’s Robert Espinoza in the 135-pound championship match.
Nistrian’s road to the 152-pound title included an 8-1 semifinal win over Sultan’s Colt Kaminski and a rugged 2-1 overtime victory over Ellensburg’s Tyler Coates in the championship match.
Beamer’s Jonny Kemman finished second in the 275-pound division after getting pinned by Ellensburg’s Blake Nichols in the championship match.
