Todd Beamer and Federal Way have both seen improvement in their tennis programs this year. It was reflected on the court as the Titans defeated the young Eagles team 3-2 on Wednesday.
Avery Liening, the top ranked player in the league, was matched up against Federal Way’s talented freshman Olivia Chong in the No. 1 singles match.
The effort from both girls was on full display as they often scrambled to make shots during long rallies. Liening was victorious in the match, winning 6-1, 6-2.
Beamer also took the next two matches on the day as they secured the win with a 3-0 lead.
Beamer’s top doubles team of Heidi Kim and Michelle Riedel topped Federal Way’s team of Rozelle Schwyhart and Tess Gabert in a tightly contested match that needed an extra game. Kim and Riedel won 6-2, 7-5.
The second doubles match also went in Beamer’s favor as Jennifer Lim and Nicole Pangan defeated Anna Rodriguez and Melissa Ouk 6-3, 6-1.
The last two matches went in Federal Way’s favor as they both went into three sets. The last set for each was the first to 10 points, but they still had to win by two.
Hannah Kim of Federal Way was able to defeat Beamer’s Briana Mao-Barry in a back and forth match. The two were evenly matched as Kim took the victory 6-4, 4-6, 10-5.
Perhaps the most dramatic victory of the day was in the final doubles match. Federal Way’s Kaley Cruz and Sydney Truong were victorious over Beamer’s Natalie Hoss and Malina Shaw.
The match’s third set saw Cruz and Truong jump out to a decent-sized lead on their way to 10 points. Hoss and Shaw battled back, eventually tying the set at 9-9. They never quite got the lead, however, and eventually fell 14-12.
For Todd Beamer, the win increased their team record to 4-2 in league and 6-3 overall. They now have 19 individual wins and 11 individual losses in league play. Their next matches will be at Decatur today at 3:30 p.m.
Federal Way falls to 3-3 in league play and 4-4 overall with the loss. They have 13 individual wins and 17 individual losses in league play. They play league-leading Thomas Jefferson at home today at 3:30 p.m.
