The No. 1-ranked Todd Beamer Titan girls soccer team needed a late goal to avoid an upset attempt by the Puyallup Vikings Thursday night.
Jessica Sanchez took a pass from Megan Miller in the 72nd minute to give the Titans the 2-1 victory at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. The win improved the Titans to 5-0-0 on the season a year after playing in the Class 4A state championship game.
“The girls have high standards for themselves and are focused on that common goal,” said head coach Carrie Henstchell. “Up to this point, we’ve had some great connections but haven’t solidified a starting lineup.”
Puyallup (3-3-0) got on the board early with a goal from Midori Moorehead in the 15th minute to take a 1-0 lead, which is how it stayed until the second half. Beamer tied the game on a goal from Jessica Niewoehner in the 55th minute.
“We still have amazing speed, possess the ball well and have incredible heart,” Hentschell said. “It may not be as pretty as last year but this group can get it done. They’re very capable.”
Last year, Beamer rolled through the South Puget Sound League South Division unbeaten, but lost five senior starters from that team.
“Those five seniors left behind big shoes to fill no doubt about it,” Hentschell said. “Building on last year’s state run is definitly a motivation for this year’s squad.”
The Titans have another big game tomorrow night when they host second-place Graham-Kapowsin (4-1-1) at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.
Decatur moved to 4-1-0 in the SPSL South with a 2-0 win over Rogers Thursday. The Gators got goals from Ashley Graves and Stephanie Kirk and the shutout from Kayla Lipston.
