Beamer girls swim to third place at West Central District meet

For the third year in a row, the Todd Beamer High School girls swim team didn’t have enough to get by the Gig Harbor Tides at the West Central District Championships.

The South Puget Sound League champion Titans ended up in third place in the team standings behind Gig Harbor, the Narrows League champs, inside the Rogers High School Aquatic Center on Saturday. Kentlake edged Beamer for second place. It was Gig Harbor’s third West Central District title in a row. Jefferson ended up in sixth place, Federal Way was ninth and Decatur finished 12th overall.

But the Titans did grab a pair of district titles Saturday. Junior Rachel Kim easily won the 200-yard individual medley and the Beamer 200 medley relay team outdistanced Kentlake.

Kim finished the individual medley in a time of 2:08.88, which was almost three seconds better than second-place Taylor Indahl from Gig Harbor. It was Kim’s first individual district title. Last year, Kim finished second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 200 IM.

Kim joined Michelle Rah, Kelly Erickson and Lesley Elijah on the 200 medley relay team. The Titans finished in 1:53.96. Beamer also finished second in the 200 free relay behind South Kitsap. The Titan team of Erickson, Rah, Katie Kramer and Kim finished in 1:43.37.

Kim also grabbed a second place in the 100 backstroke. Kim finished behind Kentlake’s Chelsea Bailey, who was the individual star of the district meet. Bailey finished the backstroke with an automatic All-American time of 55.75, compared to Kim’s 58.90.

Bailey swam another All-American time in winning the 50 free, which was the most competitive of the day. Jefferson sophomore Amber Cratsenberg finished second in the race in 24.30.

Cratsenberg did win the 100 free in an impressive time of 52.80, her second West Central District in as many years.

Other top-three finishers from the Federal Way School District came from Jefferson’s Savannah Coe (third in the 200 individual medley and second in the 100 breaststroke), Erickson (second in the 100 butterfly) and Decatur’s Kelsey Crowder (third in the 100 backstroke).

The Class 4A State Girls Swimming Championships will be held Nov. 13-14 at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

The top six finishers at the West Central District meet in each event qualified for the state meet.
