The Todd Beamer girls fastpitch team played at the West Central District Tournament for the first time in the school’s history last spring. And the Titans hope to advance even further this season and will do so with the help of seniors Sarah Petosa and Taylor Winton.
The standout players were recognized Wednesday inside the Great Hall at Todd Beamer High School in a ceremony honoring them for signing to play softball next season in college. Petosa, a centerfielder, is set to play in the fall at Seattle University and Winton, a catcher, will take the field at Marshall University.
Petosa was a first-team, All-SPSL South Division selection and was the Titans’ best offensive player last season. Petosa had six multi-hit games during the year and stole double-digit bases, including three in three different games. Petosa was also an All-City selection last season.
“It’s close to home and close to my family,” Petosa said. “I will also get a high-quality education.”
Seattle University finished 18-20 last season and will play against the defending national champion Washington Huskies several times this season.
Winton is a 6-foot catcher who is one of the most powerful hitters in the South Puget Sound League.
Marshall, located in Hunington, West Virginia, currently has two other SPSL South Division players on their roster in Melanie Stoehr (Rogers) and Taylor Thompson (Graham-Kapowsin).
“Their coach contacted me at a tournament in Vegas,” Winton said. “And pretty much recruited me from that point on. It’s just one of those places that I can call home. I know it’s going to score me for a while being so far from home, but there will be people helping me out.”
Winton had six multi-hit games last season and pounded out two home runs. She was a second-team, All-SPSL South selection and led the Titans to the program’s first-ever postseason.
“Tahlor is one of the better power hitters we have seen,” said Marshall head coach Shonda Stanton. “She has tremendous strength and is a legitimate long ball hitter. With all the speed we signed in 2009, Taylor was a must have and could potentially be one of the strongest players we have ever signed.”
Both Petosa and Winton officially signed their national letters of intent back in November.
