The Decatur Gators boys basketball team survived a frigid morning drive across the pass Thursday morning and took care of business with a non-league win over Wenatchee High School.

The Gators (4-4 overall) dominated Wenatchee, 72-54, in one of eight games at the U.S. Bank Basketball Showcase 2011 tournament at the Town Toyota Center. It was the second year in a row that Decatur has played Wenatchee in the holiday showcase. The Gators also beat up Wenatchee last season.

Decatur, again, was carried by its big two. The Gators’ two starting guards, Dom Hunter and Markus Rawls, combined to score 60 points. Hunter finished with a career-high 35 points and Rawls finished with 25.

The big day raised Hunter’s season average to 21.0 points a game and Rawls is second on the team at 15.3 a game.

Decatur led only 14-13 before dominating the final three quarters. The Gators outscored Wenatchee 58-41 in the second, third and fourth quarters.

The Gators will host Cascade High School from Everett at 7:45 p.m. Dec. 28 in the second game of a four-team tournament. Jefferson and Central Kitsap play at 6 p.m. The two winners will play Dec. 29 at 7:45 p.m. and the losers will play at 6 p.m.

In other action:

The Decatur girls also picked up a non-league win Thursday. The Gators (2-5 overall) downed the Stadium Tigers in Tacoma, 46-42.

Decatur outscored Stadium, 25-9, during the second quarter to overcome a six-point Tiger lead after the first quarter.

The Gators were led by 15 points from A’yesia Rogers and got nine each from Abby McFaul and Acacia Hall. Latrice Johnson also chipped in eight points for Decatur.
