BASKETBALL: Beamer grad, Kevin Davis, will play at Central Washington

The Central Washington University men’s basketball team has announced the addition of the sophomore forward to its roster for the upcoming 2011-12 season.

Todd Beamer High School graduate Kevin Davis will attend a state-run university to play basketball. It’s just not the one he was planning on.

The Central Washington University men’s basketball team has announced the addition of the sophomore forward to its roster for the upcoming 2011-12 season.

“We are excited to have an athlete of Kevin’s caliber for the next three years,” CWU head coach Greg Sparling said. “His ability to rebound and alter shots should have an immediate impact for us.”

Davis had committed to the University of Washington to play basketball for the Huskies as a high school senior, but couldn’t enroll at the four-year, Division-I school until getting his Associate of Arts degree for a community college. Davis was a fifth-year senior at Beamer before graduating from the school in 2010.

He spent the first part of his career at Southern Idaho Community College before transferring back to Tacoma Community College, where he played basketball only one season.

“Kevin is a Division I level athlete,” TCC head coach Carl Howell said. “I think with all the great offensive talent CWU will put around him, he should make a major impact with his rebounding and defense.”

The 6-foot-9 forward will be one of five players on the Wildcat roster to have played at TCC, where he was coached by former CWU assistant Carl Howell.

During his freshman season at TCC, Davis helped the Titans finish 26-3 on the season, while racking up a perfect 16-0 record in league play. Tacoma was upset in the NWAACC Tournament quarterfinals and finished in fourth place.

“Kevin is a very athletic post who can really fun the floor, rebound, and block shots,” Howell said. “He was really attracted to CWU because of his relationship with coach (GE) Coleman and the other TCC guys he played with last year.”

During his one season at TCC, Davis averaged 9.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.7 blocked shots a game

Davis averaged 21.3 points per game and was held in single-digits just once during his senior season at Beamer. Davis also led the SPSL in rebounding for the second year in a row at 15.3 a game and blocked an amazing 6.6 shots a game. He was named the SPSL South Most Valuable Player in 2010 and led Beamer to the state tournament for the first time in the program’s history during the 2008-09 season.

The Central Washington Wildcats open their 26-game schedule for the 2011-12 season at home in Nicholson Pavilion on Nov. 11 against Warner Pacific at 7 p.m.
