Baseball: Federal Way stays hot, blows out Rogers at SPSL Tournament; TJ advances thanks to walk-off home run

The Federal Way Eagles baseball team has picked the right time of the season to get hot. The Eagles won their eighth game in a row Saturday when they blew away the Rogers Rams, 14-2, at the South Puget Sound League Tournament at Kent Memorial Park.

The victory over Rogers gave Federal Way the SPSL’s third seed into the West Central District Tournament. Both Rogers and the Eagles finished second in their divisions of the SPSL.

Federal Way (15-5) will play a winner-to-state game at 11 a.m. at Heidelberg Park in Tacoma against Narrows League-champion Gig Harbor on Saturday. The Gig Harbor-Federal Way loser will take on the winner of a game between Bellarmine Prep and Tahoma at 5 p.m. in a loser-out, winner-to-state contest.

The Eagles’ bats were just too much for Rogers on Saturday, especially Terin Beck’s. The senior finished had a huge game against the Rams, blasting two home runs and knocking in five. In total, Federal Way finished with four home runs on the day.

Beck belted a two-run homer in the second inning and followed an inning later with a three-run shot to give Federal Way a commanding 7-2 lead.

The Eagles’ other two home runs came during the fifth inning when Federal Way sent 12 hitters to the plate and tallied seven runs to take a 14-2 lead. Brett Evans drilled a solo home run and TJ Horsfall added a two-run homer.

Elliot Morris moved to 4-1 on the season by limiting Rogers to just five hits. Rogers was also hurt by five errors in the field.

The Rams (16-4) were equally as hot as Federal Way coming into the game. Rogers had won 10 of its last 11 games, including a victory over the SPSL champion and top-ranked Puyallup.

Jefferson headed to districts

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders won a pair of loser-out games Friday and Saturday at Kent Memorial Park in super exciting fashion. The Raiders, who finished fourth in the SPSL North Division, downed Graham-Kapowsin, 2-1, Friday night in extra innings and followed up with a 3-2 victory over Kentlake Saturday.

The Raiders (15-7) will open the West Central District Tournament against Rogers at 2 p.m. at Heritage Park in Puyallup in another loser-out game. The winner will play the loser of a game between Olympia (Narrows 2) and Kentwood (SPSL 2) in a winner-to-state contest.

Mitch McQueen was the story for the Raiders Saturday. The senior threw a complete-game, three-hitter during the win over Kentlake.

McQueen, who also got the win Friday against Graham-Kapowsin after throwing one inning of relief, didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning. The win improved McQueen to 5-0 on the season.

Jefferson jumped out to a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings. Brett Fitzgerald finished 3 for 3 with a double and a pair of RBIs and Brian Moe ended up 2 for 3 with a double and the Raiders’ other RBI.

Kentlake, who finished fifth in the SPSL North, attempted a comeback with one run in the top of the sixth and one more in the seventh. The Falcons had the tying run at third base. But McQueen was able to end the game with his seventh strikeout.

The win over Graham-Kapowsin was even more exciting. University of Washington-bound senior right-hander Jeff Brigham allowed only two hits during his seven innings of work and struck out 15 Eagle hitters.

But the Raiders also couldn’t get anything going offensively. With the game tied at 1-1 after seven innings, McQueen entered and pitched a scoreless top the eighth for TJ.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, leadoff hitter Oakley Murphy belted a walk-off, solo home run over the Kent Memorial fence to left the Raiders to the 2-1 win.

In their last nine games of the season, Jefferson has played five one-run games. The Raiders have won all five of them, including three over Kentlake.
