Kayla Adams had a lot to throw for Friday morning at the Class 4A state girls track and field meet at Mount Tahoma Stadium in Tacoma.

Just a night before, Adams had a disappointing third-place finish in the discus, throwing 11-feet under her personal best.

The Thomas Jefferson senior also had thoughts of last year’s shot put competition at the state meet running through her head. Adams entered the 2010 meet as the prohibitive favorite in the event after winning the 2009 title as a sophomore and holding the state’s best throw all season long. But Mead freshman Courtney Hutchinson came out of nowhere to end Adams’ reign as the best shot putter in Washington.

She wasn’t going to let that happen during her senior year. Adams led the shot put competition Friday morning from start to finish and already knew she had another state title to add to her collection before her sixth and final throw.

So, with nothing to lose on her last throw as a high school shot putter, Adams uncorked the best toss of her stellar four-year career at TJ. Adams threw a state-best 45-feet, 10 3/4 inches to easily outdistance the competition at Star Track XXIX.

“This feels amazing,” Adams said after hugging her TJ coaches and mother. “I just wanted to PR on that last throw. So I’m happy.”

Adams will now continue her throwing career at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in the fall.

“It was a lot better than last year,” Adams said. “Overall, it was nice. I threw pretty good and I’m happy and excited.”

Hutchinson finished second Friday with a throw of 43-11 1/2.

In the discus, Kentwood’s Alyx Toeaina, who Adams beat handily to win the West Central District title, won with a toss of 136-5. Adams finished in third with a throw of 126-9 on Thursday evening on the opening night of the state track and field meet.

“The wind was psycho and was blowing our discuses all over the place,” Adams said. “But that is not an excuse because everybody had to throw.”

But the subpar finish in the discus only added fuel to Adams’ fire coming back the next day for the shot put.

“I was so anxious for this day,” Adams said. “I couldn’t even sleep. I was like, ‘I need this.’ I need to go out with a bang.”

And she did.

Adams’ performances, coupled with points from three individual events from junior Lindsey Dahl, helped the Raiders finish in 10th place in the team standings. Kentwood won the team title for the second year in a row.

Dahl finished in eighth place in the triple jump Thursday with a leap of 35-7, third in the javelin with a toss of 131-11 and didn’t make the finals in the 300-meter hurdles.

Federal Way’s Jaleecia Roland also had an ultra-impressive all-around state meet. The senior, who is headed to the University of Washington in the fall as a heptathlete, finished in second place in the triple jump with a leap of 37-10. Roland was also third in the 100-meter hurdles (15.04) and seventh in the high jump with a leap of 5-4.

Roland, along with fellow Federal Way senior Jasmine Johnson, helped the Eagle girls snag a seventh-place trophy Saturday at Mount Tahoma.

Johnson ended her stellar senior season with a second-place finish in the 800-meter run Saturday in a time of 2:13.84. Mead’s Baylee Mires won the race in 2:10.28. Johnson was also sixth in the 400 with a time of 58.60.

In other action at the state track and field meet in Tacoma:

• Jefferson senior Aaron Jeong ended his track career in impressive fashion Saturday afternoon by finishing second in a tough 100-meter field. Jeong ran a 10.85 to end up just behind Wenatchee freshman Isiah Brandt-Sims, who won in 10.74.

• Federal Way senior Meron Simon capped his senior season with a pair of medals Saturday at the state meet. Simon ended up in third place in the 1,600 meters in a time of 4:15.11. Lewis and Clark’s Kenji Bierig won the race in 4:12.66.

Simon, who will run next year at the University of Washington, was also third in the 3,200 in a time of 9:04.3. Bierig also won the 3,200 in 9:01.71.

Thomas Jefferson senior Chase Braxmeyer was sixth in the 1,600 in 4:16.18.

• Federal Way High School sophomore Marjerae Gates was unbeaten this season in the 100 meters. That was until the finals at the state track meet Saturday afternoon.

After easily winning her preliminary heat in the 100 Friday, Gates pulled her hamstring while running the anchor leg for the Eagles in the 4×100 relay later in the day. She attempted to comeback, but her leg couldn’t.

So when the gun sounded during the 4A 100-meter finals Saturday at Mount Tahoma, Gates stood and walked the entire length of the track to a standing ovation from the Mount Tahoma crowd.

Gates actually finished the 100 in an official time of 1:19.93, which was nearly 1:08 slower than the event’s winner.

Beamer freshman Alanna Vann ended up placing sixth in the 100 final in 12.60. Kentwood’s Holly DeHart won in 11.97.

Vann also ended up in seventh in the 200-meter final Saturday in 25.41. DeHart also won that event in 24.29.

• Decatur junior Drew Thompson had another impressive meet for the Gators. Thompson finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.58. Shorecrest’s Dillon Baker won in 15.14. Thompson also finished in a tie for ninth in the high jump with a leap of 6-4.

• Thomas Jefferson High School sophomore Montana Pellegrini finished up in a tie for fourth place in the 4A pole vault Saturday. Pellegrini vaulted 10-6 to finish in a four-way tie.

Issaquah’s Eva Perry won the event with a leap of 11-3. Pellegrini won the West Central District title at 11-0 last weekend.

• Federal Way freshman Ta’Mara Richey finished 16th in the long jump with a leap of 15-6 3/4.

• Beamer’s Marinah Bentley ended up in fifth place in the girls triple jump Thursday with a leap of 36-4 1/2. It was Bentley’s first trip to the state track meet.

• Federal Way senior Terrance Chambers was seventh in the boys 200 meters Saturday in a time of 22.14. Brandt-Sims won the event in 21.29.

• Federal Way senior Patrick Crews was impressive in the 800 meters. Crews was fifth in a time of 1:55.92.

• The Federal Way 4×400 boys relay team ended up in fourth place overall in a time of 3:23.59 and the 4×100 team finished eighth in 43.13.

• Federal Way junior D.J. May finished 10th in the boys long jump with a leap of 21-4 1/4.

• Federal Way sophomore javelin thrower Albert Havili was sixth in the boys discus with a toss of 155-11.

• Decatur senior Brandon Siliga was 11th in the 3A boys shot put with a throw of 46-6 1/2.

• Decatur junior Tori Zellerhoff was seventh in the 3A girls 3,200 meters in a time of 11:20.11.

• Decatur freshman Anna Paradee finished up in eighth place in the girls pole vault with a leap of 9-6.

• Beamer freshman Miranda Vaara was 13th in the high jump with a leap of 4-10.
