The USTA Pacific Northwest Junior Sectional Tennis Championships, featuring some of the best junior players in the region, starts play on Thursday. The tournament will run through Aug. 24 at Yakima Tennis Club in Yakima.
The USTA Pacific Northwest Junior Sectional Championships tournament includes players age 18 and under who are competing at the highest level of tournament play within the section comprised of Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Northern Idaho, and British Columbia. Over 300 junior tennis players will compete in four age divisions in both singles and doubles in the largest tournament of the year in the Pacific Northwest.
The 2008 Junior Sectional Championships will feature top high school tennis players, including Decatur sophomore Meghan Cassens. Cassens was the runner up at the 2008 Class 4A State Championships.
Players must compete in the USTA Pacific Northwest Junior Sectional Championships to qualify for USTA national tournaments and team events and receive a year-end section ranking. All players have qualified for the event by winning at least one match in USTA Pacific Northwest Junior Championship level tournaments.
• The 12-and-under Auburn Acers ’96 girls fastpitch softball team is looking to add a few select players to its roster for the fall 2008 through summer 2009 season.
