The Federal Way Reign ‘93 Purple added some hardware to their trophy case over the weekend with the Championship of the Sounders FC Adidas Cup under-16 division, held in Tukwila.
Odds were stacked against the local Federal Way team, which was missing four starters due to injuries, but the team responded with an impressive run to the tournament title.
The girls finished their qualifying bracket with two wins and one draw and beat the HPFC Eagles 2-0 in the semi-finals, and bested Westsound FC, 2-1, in the finals at Starfire Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Reign finished the tournament with eight goals for and only two against.
The Federal Way team won a national title last year in the US Club Soccer National Tournament. The Reign ‘93 Purple team consists of Janell Carlson, Kasey Carrel, Nicolette Carnahan, Madison Cecil, Kenna Friedman, Hannah Friedman, Ashley Graves, Madison Hibbard, Chelsa Jensen, Michelle Knight, Alicia Markey, Obia Muoneke, Danielle Robinson, Sydney Rogalla, Annalise Rutt, Breanna Strauss, Autumn Talney and Breanna Zicarelli. The team is coached by James Cecil and Barb Talney is the team manager.
• The Decatur High School girls soccer team is conducting two camps for boys and girls from 5 to 13 years old. The camps will run from Aug. 10 to 14 at the Decatur High School soccer field.
The Gator Soccer Camp will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is for boys and girls from 7 to 13. The camp is $100 per player or $85 if you mention the Federal Way Mirror when registering. Each camper will also receive a soccer ball and camp T-shirt.
The camp will include teaching of skills like dribbling, passing, shooting, heading and tackling and will also include organized games, skill competitions, scrimmages, sessions on nutrition and fitness, video clips and more.
The Little Gators camp for boys and girls 5 to 8 years old will run from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 10-14 at Decatur. The camp will focus on fun and fundamentals and campers will receive a soccer ball and T-shirt. The cost is $85 or $60 if you mention the Federal Way Mirror when registering.

• The Seattle Thunderbirds will open the 2009-10 season at ShoWare Center in Kent on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7:35 p.m. against the Everett Silvertips.
A special presale for group tickets to the season opener is now under way. The T-Birds have three group ticket options for fans to see the 2009-10 home opener. Fans can purchase group tickets in the seating bowl, a ShoWare Center luxury suite or the Blue Zone.
The Blue Zone is a new special section located in the first three rows of Section 113, on the glass, and includes 50 tickets and access to the ShoWare Center club lounge.
“This is the earliest we have been able to announce the date of our home opener,” said T-Birds Director of Operations Rick Ronish. “Having our home opener scheduled this early will allow us to do a summer pre- sale for our Groups and Season Ticket Holders, prior to tickets going on sale to the general public. We expect that tickets will once again sell quickly for Opening Night against Everett.”

The T-Birds complete 2009-10 regular season schedule will be released in early August.
T-Birds single game tickets for the 2009-10 season will go on sale on Aug. 19, at 10 a.m. online on the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office.
The Thunderbirds also announced a five-game preseason schedule. The only home preseason game of the year will be on Saturday, September 12, against the Silvertips at ShoWare Center at 7:05 p.m.
They will face the Portland Winterhawks at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, at Memorial Coliseum. They will then play three games in the Silvertips Preseason Tournament at Comcast Arena over Labor Day Weekend. They will play the Prince George Cougars on Friday, Sept. 4 at 11:30 a.m. The T-Birds then take on the Silvertips at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5. They finish out the weekend against the Spokane Chiefs at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6. Federal Way resident TC Cratsenberg is entering his second season with Spokane.
