Todd Beamer High School teammates Ugo Okoli and Troy Peterson were named Class 4A first-team All State in soccer recently after statewide balloting of members of the media. Rene Ferran of the Tri-City Herald compiled all the ballots.
Okoli, only a sophomore, had a huge year for the Titans. His 22 goals led the area and he also chipped in nine assists for Beamer, who finished second in the SPSL South before losing at the West Central District Tournament. Okoli scored a goal in 14 games, including a pair of hat tricks. One of his hat tricks came during a 3-0 win over Decatur on the final day of the SPSL South season May 8. Okoli was named the co-Most Valuable Player of the South Division by the league’s coaches, along with Peterson.
Peterson, also a sophomore, proved again to be one of the most talented soccer players in the area with a tremendous 2009 season. He was named the co-SPSL South MVP mafter scoring 15 goals and dishing out 14 assists for Beamer. Peterson had six multi-goal games, including a pair of hat tricks. He also had three games with two or more assists.
Jefferson senior defender Lenin Ramirez was named second-team, All-State. South Kitsap’s Justin Moore was selected as the Class 4A Player of the Year and South Kitsap’s Michael Krug was the Coach of the Year.
Thomas Jefferson senior Erin Fujita was named to the 4A All-State Softball Team as an outfielder after leading the Raiders to the Class 4A State Tournament for the second time in three years.
The left-hander was a first-team, All-SPSL North selection after hitting .474 during the SPSL North regular season. Fujita also finished with 16 runs scored and 21 RBIs for the Raiders and had 10 doubles, one triple and one home run. She also stole three bases. Fujita was also on the Seattle Times and Tacoma News Tribune’s All-Area teams. She will play in the fall at Hawaii-Pacific University.
Todd Beamer senior Brian Corliss was named honorable mention on the Class 4A All-State Baseball Team.
Corliss finished second in the SPSL South Division with a .489 batting average at shortstop. He also stole 11 bases in 11 attempts, finished second in the league with eight doubles, second in the league with 23 hits and scored 21 runs, while only striking out three times during the 16-game regular season.
He also finished 4-1 on the mound with a miniscule 2.73 earned-run average. During his seven starts for the Titans, he threw two complete games, striking out 40 hitters in 30 innings of work.
