Defending Class 4A girls singles state champion Meghan Cassens is headed back to the state tournament.

The junior cruised through her first two matches at the West Central District Tournament Wednesday at the Sprinker Recreation Center in Spanaway Wednesday. The district tournament concluded yesterday (after press time).

Cassens beat Emerald Ridge’s Macy Johansen in her opener, 6-0, 6-1, and downed Bellarmine Prep’s Meesha Sundarum in the quarterfinals, 6-0 6-0.

Also assuring themselves a berth at state Wednesday was the Jefferson boys doubles team of Kainoa Rosa and Makoa Rosa. The Rosa brothers, who entered the tournament as the third seed from the SPSL, beat Auburn’s Cole Jeter and Jake Carson in their opener, 6-1, 6-3.

The TJ pair then pulled of a minor upset in the quarterfinals when they downed Bellarmine Prep’s Keenan Dolan and James Lee in a rugged three-setter. The Rosas won the first set, 6-3, before losing the second set, 3-6. The Raider pair then dominated the third set, shutting out Dolan and Lee, 6-0, to secure a spot in the semifinals.

The Beamer team of Chase Friedrich and Sean O’Bryan, along with TJ pair Kyle Creek and Brandyn Gomez both won their opening-round matches, before losing in the quarterfinals.

Both teams needed to win three matches Friday to claim one of the district’s six berths to the state tournament.

In boys’ singles action, Jefferson’s Joe Lee won his opening-round match, 6-0, 6-1, but his quarterfinal match with Gig Harbor’s Max Jiganti didn’t conclude Wednesday.

Beamer’s Joseph de la Cruz also won his opener, but lost to Olympia’s John Stormans in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-3. De la Cruz had to win three matches Friday to qualify for state.

Jefferson’s Branden Muraki and James Lee dropped two matches Wednesday.

On the girls’ side, Decatur’s Sarah Lin and TJ’s Averi Kitsch both won their opening-round matches. But Lin was beaten by Central Kitsap’s Corrinne Wurden beat Lin in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-1. Kitsch’s quarterfinal match against Auburn’s Sandy Dennett wasn’t completed Wednesday.

Jefferson’s Breanna Ziccarelli and Federal Way’s Haley Ward both lost their openers before winning consolation matches Wednesday.

In doubles’ action, the TJ pair of Mackenzie Qualls and Caroline Min won their opening-round match, 7-5, 6-1. Both Lauren Lang and Mina Park and Decatur’s Jen Kanesta and Christina Sessoms lost their first matches.
