Each February, we get the pleasure of producing one of our most-read special sections of the year.
Due to the gracious support of the teachers in Federal Way Public Schools, this section comes to life. A number of years ago, we had the idea to have young kids design an ad for a few businesses in Federal Way. Each year, this has grown and now encompasses what you see in the following pages.
The goal of this project is very simple. We present the students with a blank box and the businesses’ logo and address. The kiddos use their artistic abilities to generate an ad. The businesses then comb through the submissions and select their winners. Some can’t decide, so we print more than one.
Over the years, we have had some great submissions. Most of the kids are very literal in their ads and some, well, they are true artists as they just flow to wherever. One drew a puppy’s paw and put the phone number in the toes; several used every color in the rainbow to design their ads; some came up with their own taglines like the one for Lakehaven (“LUD is the best, don’t try the rest”). Another kid-designed ad for Stanford insurance summed it up the best with a picture of a red cross, car and house – succinct and to the point.
Ah, from the minds of the young, a wealth of creativity flows.
You can get involved by voting for your favorite ad. Go to federalwaymirror.com and click on the “vote here” graphic and select your favorite from the top 10, as chosen by The Mirror’s staff. Voting is open from now until March 8. The winning ad’s creator will receive a pizza and ice cream party for their entire class, compliments of The Mirror and Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt.
