SKFR and high school soccer | Q&A with Mr. Federal Way

Q: Mr. Federal Way, last week one of the questions said South King Fire and Rescue did not attend the memorial for the young girl who died in the tree accident. I've heard differently. Which is it?

Q: Mr. Federal Way, last week one of the questions said South King Fire and Rescue did not attend the memorial for the young girl who died in the tree accident. I’ve heard differently. Which is it?

A: Last week Mr. Federal Way said something Mr. Federal Way has rarely stated in his life: Mr. Federal Way did not know. Yes, it’s a shocker. Mr. Federal Way knows this.

But in that time, Mr. Federal Way was informed of the real answer to your question. The citizens of Federal Way should be pleased to know that SKFR did indeed attend the memorial for the young girl.

It’s funny, every time a question like last week’s comes around accusing some sort of wrongdoing by a public official, firefighter, police officer, etc., it’s Mr. Federal Way who gets blamed for taking a cheap shot in the comment section and never the person asking the question.

Mr. Federal Way has even been accused of picking on certain people by some community members when he was actually defending him and trying to help clear their name.

It happened that time when Mayor Jim Ferrell’s city vehicle was seen outside of a grocery store. Turned out he was only in it right after visiting a certain incident mentioned above.

Somehow it got out that Mr. Federal Way was picking on him, when really I was helping clear the mayor’s name by informing the populace.

The more time goes on, the more Mr. Federal Way begins to question the reading comprehension skills of Federal Wayans.

Yes, Mr. Federal Way can (and will) say some inflammatory things from time to time, but please point your vitriol where it should actually be focused.

Q: Last night was the first opportunity for boys statewide to try out for boys soccer. There were 97 kids on the field for Thomas Jefferson’s first night of tryouts, which is up from about 80 last year. This was a fantastic turnout, showing that the addition of the JV program has increased the popularity and the desire for boys to participate in a school-sponsored sporting activity. However, this does beg the question: Does a “C” or freshman team deserve to be implemented? With Title IX always affecting the ability to add sports, I doubt this is something that can be done in the near future. But you never know!

A: With the popularity of soccer in Federal Way and all of the previous history, it would be fantastic for Federal Way schools to add C-teams to their repertoire. It could only serve to make the programs better and provide more opportunities in a sport that clearly needs them.

Sadly, Mr. Federal Way doesn’t believe this is feasible, partially for the reason you mentioned. Title IX compliance has already been a thorn in the side of Federal Way schools for many years.

Also, when JV programs were originally cut, it was due to budget cutbacks. Perhaps things have gotten better since then, so maybe that’s not as much of a problem.

But Title IX is something the district struggled with as recently as 2014. Girls wrestling, bowling and C-team volleyball were added to help alleviate some of the percentage problems, but it’s likely not enough to cover for another 20 boys.

Honestly, Mr. Federal Way is not quite sure where schools could go in order to institute more space for soccer. Maybe water polo and lacrosse? It’s not likely.

Hey, the more opportunities for all athletes the better. At this point, however, Mr. Federal Way sees no future for C-team soccer unless the numbers have changed considerably in just a few years.

Mr. Federal Way also has to say that it’s truly impressive what Federal Way schools have been able to accomplish on the field throughout the years without even having a JV squad until the past season.

Q: Mr. Federal Way, what’s your favorite restaurant in Federal Way?

A: None of your business.
