God doesn’t believe in atheists | Walter Backstrom column

I am mad as heck and I’m not going to take it any longer.

Gov. Christine Gregoire, because she is politically correct liberal Democrat, decided it was OK to mock people who believe in God. This is Christmas time, the holiest time of year for followers of Jesus Christ. The governor decided it was OK to allow a sign posted by atheists that proudly proclaims there is no God, no heaven and, of course, no hell.

That sign was placed next to a nativity scene in Olympia that honors the birth of Christ. What in God’s name was she thinking?

I am often amazed when every Christmas, atheists have to try to spoil the holiest of all holidays with this nonsense. If they don’t want to believe, fine. They don’t have to. But why rain on my parade?

I must confess I have never seen a happy atheist. But I have seen lots of happy believers because they have something to believe in. I am angered about the impact that this could have on a child. What should we teach our children, governor? That there is no God? No Santa? Or no hope?

Since the beginning of time, there have been tens of thousands of people who have been persecuted and murdered because they believed in God. I am unaware of any atheists who have been tortured for their beliefs — I guess the reason is because they have none.

When you see the wonder in a child’s eyes when they ask you about God, what should we say, governor? Should we say “Let’s go shopping at Wal-Mart since there’s nothing to celebrate at Christmas?” Especially since the politically correct crowd decided we should call this season “winter holidays” so that we won’t offend anybody. Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me.

I reject that type of teaching. I believe in God, Santa and, on top of that, the Ten Commandments. So there.

I realize that the liberals and the Hollywood elite just shake their heads in pity, and dismiss my beliefs as one of those religious bigots — a little slow on the uptake who needs to believe in something.

My daughter and I were watching the TV news and the controversy surrounding the atheist sign at the State Capitol. She asked me if there was a God. I just about choked on my coffee. I put the coffee down, turned off the TV and told her: “There is a God — and that his love for you is as real as your father’s love.”

I told her about the many miracles I have witnessed and that my parents told me about. I told her about the day she was born. I knew then and there that she was gift from God. I reminded her that when we go to church on Sunday, those people at church are called believers, and they believe in the one we call the Alpha and the Omega. I told her that with all my heart, I believe in God and that he answered my prayers when she came. I finally told her to always believe, and to pray, and to do the best she can, and he will never forsake her. I have tried to live my life with these beliefs. And I ended this with a quote from Abraham Lincoln: “I have been driven many times to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go.”

To all the believers, Merry Christmas. To the non-believers, my hope is that you find something to believe in.

No excuses.
