Woman who abandoned newborn at church pleads guilty

The 23-year-old woman who left her newborn on a church’s stoop in September, pleaded guilty July 28 to one count of third-degree abandonment of a dependent person. She will be sentenced Aug. 14.

The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office will recommend a 24-month deferred sentence, without jail time. The woman would instead complete 200 hours of community service, spokesman Dan Donohoe said. The recommended sentence would also require her to remain employed or attend school, undergo mental health counseling and have no contact with the child, unless allowed by Child Protective Services.

The newborn was found in late September 2008 at Steel Lake Presbyterian Church, 1829 S. 308th St. The baby girl was transported to the hospital in fair condition. She was estimated to be about 12 hours old at that time.
