A woman was sentenced to 10 days of jail and 72 hours of community service on Oct. 3 for first-degree theft after she embezzled at least $5,000 from the Federal Way Community Center between May 1, 2012 and Sept. 5, 2013.
Madison Dupras Armstrong, 26, pleaded guilty to first degree theft on Sept. 16 after telling police she took money from the community center to pay for vacation, credit card bills and other financial needs, according to probable cause documents.
Armstrong was investigated after management noticed suspicious refund charges on several tills, including Armstrong’s. She told police the refunds were given to customers when the pool was closed due to vomit or fecal pollution, however, the community center supervisor told police refunds are uncommon. The center usually gives guests a voucher.
Upon reviewing budget sheets, it was found that nine closure dates in 2013 matched with refund transactions, according to court documents.
In addition to confinement and community service, Armstrong is also under a 10-year no-contact order with the Federal Way Community Center.
The judge also ordered her to pay restitution and the amount will be determined at a later hearing. City officials are seeking over $16,000.
