From staff reports:

The community dedicated a new soccer field April 6 at Westway Community Center, 33400 21st Ave. SW in Federal Way.

The work on a previously-unused field behind the Westway Community Center came from Franciscan’s Youth Violence Prevention Initiative.

The Franciscan Health System sought and received enough grant funding to turn the unused area into a soccer field.

Franciscan is also partnering with the Boys and Girls Club to offer a free spring soccer league on the field for neighborhood youth in kindergarten through the third grade.

Joining Westway residents were Mayor Skip Priest, along with Councilmembers Jeanne Burbidge, Diana Noble-Gulliford, Susan Honda and Kelly Maloney, joined Federal Way School District staff as well as Mark Hendricks, Boys and Girls Club Director, and Kathy Schmidt, Volunteer Services and Community Integration Manager for Franciscan Health System.

The Decatur High School cheer squad gave an enthusiastic cheer for Westway. A blueprint was also discovered from September 1991, showing the Westway Community Center plan and the soccer field, located where the new one stands today.
