The state canceled plans to give ninth-graders the option of taking the high school Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) in math, reading and writing. The test was geared for those students who felt they could pass the 10th-grade WASL in the ninth grade.

The reason behind the move was costs. So many students signed up for the test that it would have cost the state $477,000.

State Superintendent Randy Dorn has already announced plans to end the WASL. However that change will not take place this spring during the usual testing time.
