A pair of motorcycles traveling at speeds of over 100 mph fled after an attempt to pull them over in Federal Way, but with the Washington State Patrol’s Aviation Section in the sky, the riders would not travel too far before being apprehended.
According to WSP Trooper Rick Johnson, just after midnight Nov. 8, two motorcycles were going at high speeds and doing wheelies on Interstate 5. Troopers attempted to stop the pair, but they both fled, continuing to ride uninterrupted until they stopped for gas in Renton, Johnson said in an X post. After they stopped, WSP troopers arrested the pair.
Johnson said that the motorcycles were impounded since the riders were booked into jail. Johnson said that motorcyclists are a danger to other motorists in the event of a collision while traveling at these high speeds. He added that there was no heavy traffic at the time of the chase, so the troopers were not in danger as the aircraft followed.
“The motorcycles ran from troopers and our aircraft patrols on some nights and was able to observe the bikes,” Johnson said. “The plane simply follows them, recording speeds, etcetera. The forward looking infrared is what is used on the plane.”
