Low-income seniors and low-income disabled individuals can now apply for Federal Way’s utility tax rebate program.

The rebate covers the city’s portion (7.75 percent) of utility taxes, including gas, electricity, telephone, cell phone, pagers, cable television and garbage and recycling. Past rebates have averaged $133, according to city spokeswoman Linda Farmer.

To qualify for the rebate, one must live in city limits and meet federal income requirements. Individuals cannot exceed an income of $29,500 for a one-person household, $33,700 for two-person household, $37,950 for a three-person household and $42,150 for four-person household. Required documents include a tax return or bank statements and the customer’s utility bills.

Low-income seniors must be 65 or older. Low-income disabled persons must establish disability status for all or part of 2009 by providing one of the following: Proof of Social Security, disability income, proof of supplemental security income or a physician’s disability certificate.
