From staff reports:
Beginning July 15, work on SW 336th/21st Ave. SW project will begin and end earlier, with work scheduled between 5 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily on weekdays. The new hours will last until the end of August, according to the city.
The project itself is expected to be completed in December 2013.
“We’re making these changes to try to reduce the delays to drivers and impacts to businesses from the ongoing work,” said Chris Carrel, communications coordinator for the city, in a news release. “Construction always causes some inconvenience but we think we can reduce the delays and frustrations for drivers with the earlier hours.”
According to the city, Public Works staff consulted with the contractor, SCI Infrastructure, to assess how the impacts of the construction could be reduced. With the previous hours, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., significant backups had been occurring since the project began on May 3.
All parties involved feel the shift in hours will help avoid the traffic congestion, and may shorten the project’s construction time because the contractor’s suppliers can avoid the congestion issues that have arisen since the project began.
Night work is not an option, according to the city, because of the contractor’s need to receive shipments of materials throughout the day, and the potential for noise impacts on local residential neighborhoods.
