Three children were sent to the hospital with injuries after a collision Tuesday afternoon between a school bus and a car in Federal Way.
The incident occurred about 2:50 p.m. Nov. 13 at 9th Avenue South and South 295th Place. A school bus with 51 students from Nautilus Elementary was involved in a head-on collision with a Honda Civic.
A 10-year-old Nautilus student on the bus was taken to St. Francis Hospital with minor injuries, and was back in school Wednesday morning, according to the school district.
The car was traveling north on 9th Avenue South when the driver became distracted by the two children in the backseat, according to a Federal Way police report. The driver veered into the opposite lane of traffic and collided head-on with the school bus. The driver and two children, ages 2 and 4, were transported to St. Francis Hospital. There were no significant injuries, according to police.
After the collision, the students on the school bus taken back to Nautilus, and parents were notified to pick up their children.
“We really applaud our bus driver,” school district spokeswoman Diane Turner said. “She handled herself in exemplary fashion. She kept the kids calm and notified the appropriate folks and did a great job for the kids.”
“We are very relieved that everyone involved is doing well,” wrote Stacy Lucas, principal at Nautilus Elementary, in a letter to parents.
