Three new officers to the Federal Way Police Department were sworn in at a City Council meeting on Tuesday.

Officers Shane Winnings, Donovan Heavener and Gary Kopis took their Oath of Office after a brief introduction from Chief of Police Andy Hwang.

Winnings graduated from the Basic Law Enforcement Academy on Aug. 11 and is currently in the police department’s field training program. Heavener returns after having been a founding member of the Federal Way Police Department, initially serving from 1996-2002, and most recently worked as a sergeant with the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Police Department before returning to the Federal Way department. Kopis joined the police department as a lateral police officer from the Honolulu Police Department with eight years of experience.

The three officers brings the department’s total officer count to 126 of the city’s 131 budgeted officer positions, which recently had an officer retire.

Officer James McCrary was hired Aug. 1 to fill a recruit police officer position. McCrary worked in sales for Vivint Smart Home Security Systems in Utah for eight years and is bilingual in English and Spanish.
