An overnight wind storm that hit the south Puget Sound area has left thousands of Federal Way residents and three schools in the Federal Way School District without power.

Puget Sound Energy as of 8:55 a.m. reported that 1,613 Federal Way customers were without power. The Federal Way School District announced on its website that Sequoyah Middle School would be closed Tuesday and that power was out at Rainier View and Lakeland elementary schools, though school is in session at those two schools.

The district says that parents may keep their children home from Rainier View and Lakeland if they choose.

Sequoyah was closed because many of its toilets flush by way of a sensor, which requires electricity to operate. Activities at the school have also been canceled for Tuesday.

Puget Sound Energy spokeswoman Meghan Fitzpatrick said that the utility would try to restore power by the end of the day Tuesday, but could not pinpoint a specific time. Fitzpatrick said that the outages were weather related, and that power lines had been downed by tree limbs.

Federal Way fared better than some of its neighbors: Puget Sound Energy reported that the cities Kent, Covington and Auburn each had at least 2,000 customers without power. Maple Valley had over 4,000 without power.

The signs of the outage were visible in Federal Way Tuesday morning. Businesses around the intersection of 320th Street and Pacific Highway were closed due to the outage. A gas station had taped off its pumps, and a Safeway supermarket was half dark and only doing transactions for dry goods.
