Third fire in three days disrupts Todd Beamer High School; two students arrested

A third fire in as many days was set Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Todd Beamer High School in Federal Way. Two students have been arrested.

The fires have all been set in trash cans in bathrooms, according to school district officials.

The damage has been minor, but the disruption has brought students out of classes for hours this week as students were evacuated.

The first fire in a boys bathroom, at 9:51 a.m. Monday, left students unable to return to classes for a length of time due to to smoke in the halls. Students instead spent time in the school’s gym.

The second fire, at 10:18 a.m. Tuesday, had students evacuated to the Great Room, while students and staff waited for the fire marshal to give the all clear. On Tuesday, police apprehended a suspect.

However, fires again were set on Wednesday, this time in a girls bathroom. Students were out of the classroom for about 40 minutes while a fire marshal investigated and cleared the scene.

Staff have been monitoring key areas of the building, said Diane Turner, district spokeswoman.

The school has also ordered security cameras, which will be in place by the new year.

“The real issue is the disruption to learning,” Turner said. “A few people are causing tremendous disruption to the vast majority. Of course we are concerned about the safety of all the students and staff.”

Police are investigating the fires.

On Tuesday, Federal Way police arrested a 16-year-old student at Todd Beamer, an Asian male who was charged and booked in relation to Tuesday’s fire, police spokeswomen Cathy Schrock said.

On Wednesday, a 17-year-old African American female was arrested in relation to the fire set on Wednesday.

“We are taking this very seriously,” Turner said. “We will prosecute and anyone involved will be expelled.”
