Tacoma police arrested the murder suspect who police believe fatally shot a man in a Federal Way driveway on May 23.

Tacoma police arrested the murder suspect who police believe fatally shot a man in a Federal Way driveway on May 23.

Michael Anthony Espinosa, 26, also known as “Joker,” was arrested in Tacoma when police were doing a random check of a “problem house” in the 3800 block of Mckinley Avenue, according to Loretta Cool, spokeswoman for the Tacoma Police Department.

Cool said Tacoma police have been working with the landlord of that house, which is broken up into several apartment units, to resolve some ongoing issues the landlord has had with some of the tenants. Police recognized Espinosa as the suspect in the fatal Federal Way shooting.

Federal Way police will book Espinosa on a Department of Corrections escape warrant, police said.

The shooting happened at approximately 2:10 a.m., when police received multiple 911 calls of shots fired in the area of 1400 S. 304th St. Upon arrival, officers located Martin A. Douglas, a 53-year-old Tacoma man, who had a gunshot wound to his head, was lying in the driveway.

A 32-year-old woman living at the residence knew the victim, who got into a verbal dispute with two suspects over a prior incident. Douglas was treated at the scene and later died of his injury at Harborview Medical Center.

Witnesses reported hearing two gunshots and saw two men running away from the scene eastbound. Police conducted an extensive K-9 search but could not locate the suspects.

However, following the  preliminary investigation, police developed probable cause to arrest Espinosa.

The second suspect has not been identified, nor have police located the murder weapon.

The Federal Way Police Department’s homicide investigation is still ongoing.
