T-shirts help battle breast cancer

So far, students have raised nearly $150 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation

Students at Thomas Jefferson High School are supporting breast cancer research and learning marketing skills at the same time.

Shayla Doherty and Samantha Pham, both juniors in Connie Davolt’s marketing class, chose to complete their class project by designing T-shirts, selling them and donating the profits to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. A small percentage from the sale of each shirt also went to the Gilda’s Club Quad Cities cancer support community.

“We were doing a community service project and we thought we would do something that supports breast cancer,” Doherty said.

The students got the idea because three staff members at Thomas Jefferson are either currently suffering from breast cancer or have suffered from breast cancer.

“We just thought it would be a good cause,” Doherty said.

So far, the students have raised nearly $150 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. They are selling the shirts for $10 each, a price that makes shirts easier to sell because there’s minimal requirement to have change, Pham said.

The students purchased the shirts for $6.06 each. They recently ran out of stock and plan on ordering more.

“We learned a lot more facts about breast cancer and we learned how to market the shirts,” Pham said of the project.
