Washington State Patrol troopers pursued a DUI suspect who crashed into a Federal Way apartment complex.

Troopers called Federal Way police for assistance at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, as they chased the driver through city limits. WSP had tried arresting the driver on suspicion of DUI and hit and run while the vehicle was stopped on Highway 18, police said. The driver allegedly fought with a state trooper and dragged him down the roadway as he was trying to make the arrest, according to police.

The driver apparently crashed the vehicle through a security gate at Cascade Ridge Apartments at 1900 SW Campus Drive. “It sounded like a bomb went off, it was so loud,” reported one resident who lives in the nearby Arcadia townhouses.

The smashed vehicle was found outside building 29 in the apartment complex. The driver fled on foot. Federal Way police attempted a K9 track, and Guardian One helicopters circled overhead in search of the suspect.

At 4:22 a.m., a resident in the 1500 block of SW 325th Place called 911 to report an unknown man knocking on their door, according to police. State patrol responded to the call and took custody of the suspect from Federal Way police.

The suspect was booked into King County jail with charges pending for DUI, two counts of hit and run, and eluding law enforcement.

The hit and run incident took place at I-5 and South 320th Street in Federal Way, the state patrol reports.

The suspect allegedly caused a two-car collision and continued driving, then pulled over on westbound Highway 18. The driver fell asleep while waiting for troopers to arrive, according to the state patrol.

The suspect then led a “slow speed pursuit” along South 348th Street, eventually turning onto 17th Avenue SW and crashing through the gated entrance of Cascade Ridge Apartments.
